Find yourself running to the bathroom all the time? The medical term for that is frequent urination. Though it could just mean you’re drinking too many fluids throughout the day, it could be a symptom of an underlying health problem such as diabetes, an enlarged prostate, stroke or interstitial cystitis.
If you experience any of the following symptoms, you need to contact a physician immediately:
- Blood in urine
- Brown urine
- Painful urination
- Pain in your side, lower abdomen or groin
- Loss of bladder control
- High fever
Diagnosing Frequent Urination
To diagnose frequent urination, your physician will perform a physical exam and ask questions about your medical history. Depending on the results from the initial exam, your physician will perform one of the following tests:
Urinalysis – This tests detects numerous compounds that pass through the urine
Cystometry This test checks to see whether the problem is occurring because of a muscle or nerve problem
Cystoscopy – During this test, the physician looks inside the urethra and bladder to diagnose the problem
Neurological Tests – Diagnostic neurological tests are used to diagnose nerve-related disorders
Ultrasonography – Ultrasonography is a digital imaging test used to visualize the internal body structure.
